Entrance to Xibalba by Lisa Vollmer
In Maya cosmology, cenotes were regarded as portals to Xibalba, the underworld and realm of transformation. This photograph was created at the entrance to a sacred cenote in the Yucatán Peninsula, the threshold between the visible and unseen worlds.

Please join us as we celebrate 10 Years of our gallery with Below the Surface, a new exhibition featuring photographs by Lisa Vollmer and Sabine von Falken.
Inspired by the landscapes, architecture, and sacred waters of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, the exhibition explores what lies beneath the visible world through ancient Maya monuments, cenotes, and the hidden structures that connect past and present.
A centerpiece of the exhibition is El Castillo from Lisa Vollmer's Moving Scape series, a five-panel photographic work inspired by the pyramid at Chichén Itzá, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Created from multiple perspectives of the monument and a sacred cenote, the piece reflects the mysterious nature of the site itself: a pyramid built upon an earlier pyramid above an extensive underground water system that sustained both daily life and sacred ritual. Through its shifting composition, the work reveals what exists below the surface.
The show also includes self-portraits created within cenotes and new works by Sabine von Falken from the Britannica series.
We hope you will join us for the opening reception and experience these new works in person.
On view through September 7, 2026
